The blue shark, called the great blue shark as well, is a requiem shark found in deep waters across the world's temperate and tropical oceans. It belongs to the family Carcharhinidae and is the only living species in the genus *Prionace*. A fossil species, *P. clarki*, is known from Late Pliocene teeth found in California. On average, these sharks reach about 3.1 meters (10 feet) in length and prefer cooler waters. They are known for long migrations, for instance traveling from New England to South America. The IUCN lists them as Near Threatened.
Though generally sluggish, blue sharks can move very quickly. They are viviparous, giving birth to large litters of 25 to over 100 pups. Blue sharks are oceanic and epipelagic, found worldwide in deep temperate and tropical waters from the surface down to about 350 meters (1,150 feet). In temperate seas, they may approach shore, where divers can observe them; in tropical waters, they stay at greater depths. They range as far north as Norway and as far south as Chile, and are found off every continent except Antarctica. The greatest Pacific concentrations occur between 20° and 50° North, with strong seasonal shifts. In the tropics, they spread evenly between 20° N and 20° S.
