For much of its taxonomic history it sat within the genus Dasyatis, but in 2008 morphological and molecular evidence prompted its transfer to Neotrygon, a genus whose members are colloquially called "maskrays" because of the distinctive coloration surrounding their eyes. The species belongs to the family Dasyatidae, a group encompassing nine genera and roughly seventy species. Physically, the ray presents a flat, rhomboid disc reaching about 46.5 cm (18.3 in) in width and up to 70 cm (28 in) in total length. Its dorsal surface is a deep green peppered with vivid blue spots, while the ventral side is pale white—a classic countershading arrangement. The snout is short and broadly angular. Two venomous barbs, one large and one medium, sit at the base of a tail roughly twice the body's length. Bright yellow eyes grant a wide field of vision, and spiracles positioned just behind them allow water to reach the ventrally placed gills even while the animal rests on the substrate. Two regional subgroups, the Java and Bali forms, are recognized, the latter being notably larger.

Range & Habitat

Kuhl's maskray inhabits tropical and subtropical waters spanning a remarkably broad geographic corridor. Its range stretches from 29°N to 31°S latitude and 20°E to 171°W longitude, encompassing the Indian Ocean and much of the western Pacific. Specific localities include northern Australia, the east coast of South Africa, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Somalia, and India. Across Asia, the species is recorded in nearly every continental sea, from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal through the Andaman, Java, Banda, Celebes, Sulu, and Philippine Seas, all the way to the East China Sea, Yellow Sea, and Sea of Japan. The ray typically occupies depths shallower than 90 m (295 ft), favoring sandy and muddy flats but also appearing near rocky coral reefs and seagrass meadows. Unlike many stingray relatives that bury themselves in sand as a regular hunting strategy, Kuhl's maskray digs into the sediment primarily to conceal itself from predators. Reproduction follows an ovoviviparous pattern: fertilized eggs develop inside the mother's body, with embryos drawing nourishment from uterine fluid rather than a placenta. The female operates on an annual cycle, mating in October and November and ovulating during the Australian summer (December through late February), a window that overlaps embryonic development. Each litter contains up to seven pups measuring 150 to 330 mm at birth, and the species passes 32 sets of chromosomes to its offspring.

Human Exploitation & Conservation

Kuhl's maskray occupies a complex position in human economies. Its vivid coloration makes it a frequent subject of the aquarium trade, yet its mature size often outgrows typical household tanks, and it is routinely confused with the larger, brighter blue-spotted ribbontail ray. In commercial fisheries, particularly in the Java Sea, it is harvested in large quantities by bottom trawls, trammel nets, and fish traps. In 2006–2007 it ranked as the second-most significant shark, ray, or skate species landed, with individual boats reporting roughly 700 kg (1,500 lb) per catch. The meat is typically smoked, salted, or dried for local markets at modest prices. The ray's skin also finds use in traditional percussion instruments, notably the Arab and Turkish darbuka and riq. Conservation concerns center on coral-reef degradation in the north-western Pacific and pollution from agricultural fertilizers and pesticides. In Queensland, Australia, the species benefits from protection within the Shoalwater area, the Corio Bay Ramsar Site, and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Its venom, delivered by a barb up to 300 mm long, contains serotonin, 5′-nucleotidase, and phosphodiesterase, making encounters with humans potentially dangerous.
