Echidna

The Witch of Greed, driven by curiosity, who wants to record every outcome of Subaru's Return by Death.

Echidna is the Witch of Greed and one of the primary characters of the fourth arc. Her curiosity about the unknown and her thirst for knowledge define her; she calls it love, and directs it at Subaru's Return by Death, to the point that she longs to become his advisor and record the many possibilities his ability creates. She is voiced by Maaya Sakamoto in Japanese.

Lore & Background

Described as black-hearted, Echidna cannot understand other people's feelings and could be seen as a sociopath by normal standards; she has no problem with sophistry, lying and deceiving others to get knowledge. She bears ill will toward only three people: Satella, Emilia and one other. Her soul is among those of the dead witches housed in the Sanctuary, and Roswaal has possessed his descendants' bodies across generations in the hope of reviving her, his master and the love of his life.

In the Sanctuary Subaru becomes especially close to Echidna, who can block out Satella when she tries to silence him for speaking about Return by Death, giving him someone to rely on for the first time.
