Armada F/X Racers

Top-down racing game based on the Dreamcast title Armada.

Armada F/X Racers

Armada F/X Racers, a futuristic racing title for the Game Boy Color, was released in 2000. The game was developed by Metropolis Digital and published by Metro3D, and it draws from the 1999 Dreamcast game Armada.

In this top-down racer, players compete across six courses set on alien planets. Three modes are available. In Campaign mode, the player must place as a finalist in a series of races, then face a boss using their vehicle and power-ups, earning points based on performance. Mission mode lets the player replay single races from courses already cleared. A third mode, Survival, unlocks after finishing the campaign and requires the player to defeat bosses in a set order. Six alien races are selectable, each with unique vehicles and handling traits.

Metro3D announced the game in December 1999 and showed it at E3 in May 2000. Originally planned for an April 2000 release, it was delayed to August 25 of that year.

Critics panned the game. IGN’s Craig Harris called it one of the worst top-down racers he had played, citing rushed and irritating gameplay, a sparse manual, a choppy framerate and scrolling engine, and poor audio. Allgame’s Nick Woods noted that the gameplay loop quickly becomes repetitive and easy to beat, with the game’s limited appeal fading after a single playthrough.

Reader's Guide

The game includes three modes: Campaign, Mission, and Survival. In Campaign mode, the player progresses through a series of courses by reaching a finalist position, then competes against a boss using their car and power-ups to accumulate the most points. Mission mode offers single races on previously completed courses. Survival mode, unlocked after completing the campaign, requires bosses to be completed in order. Critics panned the game: Craig Harris of IGN called it 'one of the worst top-down racing games I've played,' citing rushed and irritating gameplay, a paltry manual, choppy framerate, and poor sound. Nick Woods of Allgame noted that the cycle of gameplay 'gets old and repetitive, making the game fairly easy to defeat,' and that its 'limited charm and usefulness dissipates after one play through.'
