The Angel of Death
The weary angel who handed his office to a gunfighter.
The Angel of Death is a character in the origin story of the Saint of Killers in Preacher. He is in Hell for a poker game, and weary of his position, when the dead gunfighter's hatred freezes Hell over. He offers the man his job: to return to Earth and collect the souls of those who die by violence, under the command of God alone.
Lore & Background
The Angel's sword is melted down in the last fire burning in Hell and cast into the two Walker Colt revolvers the Saint carries. The Angel then resigns and gives the gunfighter the title of the Saint of Killers. The comics afterwards describe the Saint himself as an Angel of Death who answers only to God.
