2022 NX1

A temporarily captured mini-moon with a small impact risk in the next century.

Last updated

2022 NX1 is a near-Earth object roughly 10 m in diameter discovered on 2 July 2022 by Grzegorz Duszanowicz and Jordi Camarasa at Moonbase South Observatory in Namibia. It became temporarily captured by Earth's gravity between 11 June 2022 and 3 July 2022, passing within Earth's Hill sphere at a low relative velocity. Its reflectance spectrum, obtained with the Gran Telescopio Canarias, is consistent with a K-type or Xk-type asteroid, ruling out artificial origin or lunar ejecta. The object has a 1.2% chance of impacting Earth between 2075 and 2122.
