2020 VV

Apollo asteroid with a brief 4.4% impact risk for 2033.

Last updated

2020 VV is an Apollo near-Earth asteroid roughly 12 m in diameter, discovered on 5 November 2020 when it was about 0.036 AU from Earth. It is notable for a brief period in November 2020 when impact probabilities for a potential collision on 12 October 2033 reached as high as 4.4% (1 in 23) according to NEODyS-2. The asteroid has a very low orbital inclination of 0.35° and an Earth-MOID of only 14,800 km. Its size range of 10–22 meters means it could be as large as the Chelyabinsk meteor, though it is not classified as a potentially hazardous object because it is far smaller than the 140-meter threshold.
