Gameplay

Ragnarok Odyssey is a real-time action RPG similar to the Monster Hunter series. It retains RPG elements such as health and magic, item collecting and crafting, NPC interaction, and a class system, but lacks a leveling system. Missions are received at guild halls and typically involve collecting items or defeating enemies. Six interchangeable classes are available: Sword Warrior, Hammersmith, Mage, Assassin, Hunter, and Cleric, each with unique strengths and weaknesses. Instead of leveling, a Card System allows equipping cards to clothing or armor for stat boosts and class-specific abilities. Upgraded armor increases Card Capacity, enabling higher-cost or additional cards, which are found in shops or dropped by enemies.

Ragnarok Odyssey Ace

Ragnarok Odyssey Ace expands on the original game for PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3. It bundles every piece of DLC, introduces fresh foes, abilities, and dungeons, tweaks the HUD and gameplay balance, and adds a new chapter after the main story ends. Early print copies came with bonus items, and players can transfer their save data from the first game. The Vita version launched in Japan on August 29, 2013, with a single new track by Nobuo Uematsu.

Reception

Ragnarok Odyssey and its enhanced version, Odyssey Ace, landed with mixed to average critical reception across all platforms, as reflected by Metacritic. Destructoid's James Stephanie Sterling was among the most positive, highlighting the original's visuals as the finest on the Vita at launch, alongside quick loading, deep customization, responsive controls, and tasteful touchscreen integration. Famitsu awarded the first game a score of one nine, two eights, and one seven, while later giving the Vita version of Odyssey Ace two nines, one eight, and one nine. The Digital Fix rated the original a six out of ten, describing it as a perfect example of great concepts let down by poor execution. Digital Spy gave it two out of five, calling it a polished title with solid controls and attractive graphics, but lacking in innovation and feeling like a generic RPG. 411Mania scored the PlayStation 3 version of Odyssey Ace a six out of ten, labeling it a niche Monster Hunter clone that would satisfy fans between major releases, though not a personal favorite. By July 2012, the original had sold over 100,000 units in Japan, while Odyssey Ace moved 31,622 physical copies in its debut week.
