Jordan Spieth

Jordan Alexander Spieth (born July 27, 1993) is an American professional golfer on the PGA Tour who once held the world number one ranking and has three major titles to his name.

Spieth won the U.S. Junior Amateur twice, becoming the only player besides Tiger Woods to do so. He reached the top of the World Amateur Golf Ranking in 2012 and turned pro later that year. At age 19, he claimed his first PGA Tour victory in 2013. His first major came at the 2015 Masters, where his 18-under-par score matched Tiger Woods’ 1997 tournament record. Later that year, he won the U.S. Open, becoming at 21 the youngest winner of that event since Bobby Jones in 1923. After a runner-up finish at the 2015 PGA Championship, Spieth reached world number one for the first time. He then won the 2015 Tour Championship, securing the FedEx Cup. His third major came at the 2017 Open Championship. Following a period of poor form, he did not win another professional event until 2021. As of 2026, he has 13 PGA Tour wins.

Born in Dallas, Texas, to Mary Christine and Shawn Spieth, both from Pennsylvania, Spieth attended St. Monica Catholic School and Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas, graduating in 2011. He learned golf at Brookhaven Country Club.

In 2009 and 2011, Spieth won the U.S. Junior Amateur, joining Tiger Woods as the only two-time winners. Before turning 18 in July 2011, he was ranked number one in the AJGA Golf Rankings. He finished second at the Junior PGA Championship in 2008 and 2009 and was named Rolex Junior Player of the Year in 2009.

In 2010, Spieth accepted an amateur exemption into the PGA Tour’s HP Byron Nelson Championship—the first such exemption since 1995. He made the cut, becoming the sixth-youngest to do so in a PGA Tour event, and finished tied for 16th after being tied for seventh after three rounds. He received another exemption in 2011, making the cut and tying for 32nd.

Spieth played college golf at the University of Texas for his freshman year and one semester of his sophomore year. He was on the 2011 Walker Cup team, halving a foursomes match and winning both singles matches. As a freshman, he won three events, led the team in scoring average, helped win the NCAA championship, and was named All-Big 12, Big 12 Freshman of the Year, Player of the Year, and a first-team All-American.

In 2012, Spieth entered the U.S. Open as an alternate after Brandt Snedeker withdrew, tying for 21st and earning low amateur honors. That performance, combined with Patrick Cantlay turning pro, made him the world’s number one amateur. He left Texas after one term of his sophomore year to turn professional in December 2012, having played eight PGA Tour events and made five cuts.

After failing to reach the final stage of PGA Tour qualifying school in 2012, Spieth turned pro. He signed with Under Armour in January 2013 and with BioSteel Sports Supplements in March.

In the 2013 season, Spieth missed the cut at his first event, the Farmers Insurance Open. He then posted a tie for second at the Puerto Rico Open and a tie for seventh at the Tampa Bay Championship, earning Special Temporary Member status in March, which allowed unlimited sponsor exemptions. He added a tie for ninth at the RBC Heritage. On July 14, just shy of his 20th birthday, he won the John Deere Classic in a three-way sudden-death playoff, holing a greenside bunker shot on the 72nd hole to force the playoff. He became the fourth-youngest PGA Tour winner and the first teenage winner since Ralph Guldahl in 1931. The win gave him full PGA Tour membership, entry into the FedEx Cup (where he entered 11th), and spots in the 2013 Open Championship, PGA Championship, and 2014 Masters. Five weeks later, he lost a playoff at the Wyndham Championship to Patrick Reed.

At the Deutsche Bank Championship, a final-round 62 lifted him to a tie for fourth. Captain Fred Couples then selected him for the 2013 Presidents Cup. He was named PGA Tour Rookie of the Year on September 27, 2013, finishing the season 10th on the money list and 22nd in the world rankings.

Spieth made his Masters debut in April 2014 and shared the 54-hole lead.
