In The Lightning Thief, the winged shoes are the flying sneakers that Luke Castellan gives Percy for his quest. In the 2010 film they are a pair of flying winged Converse All-Stars stolen from Hermes.

The shoes turn out to be a trap: in Hades's realm, Grover is nearly dragged into Tartarus by Luke's flying shoes. In the TV series, Percy receives the winged shoes from Luke before leaving camp, and after reaching Tartarus, Grover is nearly pulled into the pit by them. In the film, Percy uses the shoes to retrieve the second pearl from the crown of the statue of Athena at the Parthenon in Nashville.
