Pandora's Box
Opened by curiosity. Sealed by fear. It released every evil, but the one thing that could save us remains locked away.
Pandora's Box, called Pandora's pithos in the books, is the jar from which evils were released into the world; Elpis, the goddess of hope, remained inside as the only thing for humans to keep. The Nosoi, the spirits of illness, plague and disease, were originally locked up in it.

In The Last Olympian, Prometheus offers Percy a chance to surrender, marked by releasing the spirit of hope inside Pandora's pithos. Percy refuses, and later gives the pithos to Hestia, reasoning that hope remains safest in the hearth.
