NVDEC, originally called NVCUVID, is a hardware feature on Nvidia graphics cards that handles video decoding, shifting this demanding work away from the CPU. It replaces the earlier PureVideo technology and is found in Kepler-generation and newer Nvidia GPUs. For encoding, it is paired with NVENC as part of Nvidia's Video Codec SDK. The technology can use dedicated fixed-function decoding hardware (Nvidia PureVideo) for full offloading, or, when that hardware is unavailable, it can rely on CUDA software running on the GPU for partial decoding. Supported codecs vary by GPU architecture and include MPEG-2, VC-1, H.264 (AVC), H.265 (HEVC), VP8, VP9, and AV1. NVCUVID was initially included in the Nvidia CUDA Toolkit before being renamed NVDEC and moved to the Nvidia Video Codec SDK. The API is available on Windows and Linux, but because it is proprietary (unlike the open-source VDPAU API), Linux support requires the proprietary Nvidia driver. In terms of software support, GStreamer, FFmpeg, and mpv (via FFmpeg) have all supported NVDEC since 2017. Hardware-accelerated decode and encode are available on Nvidia GeForce, Quadro, Tesla, and GRID products with Fermi or newer GPU generations.
