Last updated
Targus is a privately held multinational company that makes mobile computing accessories, including laptop and tablet cases, mice, keyboards, privacy screens, and universal docking stations. It created the first laptop case in 1983. The company employs about 500 people globally, with Mikel H. Williams serving as CEO and chairman.
Founded in 1983 in Barnes, London, by Neil Bruce-Copp, Targus began after he invented the first carrying case for a personal computer. Orders from IBM and ICL provided the initial funding. In 1986, Targus introduced its first laptop case, the T3100L, after a 250-unit order from Toshiba. By 1995, the company was known as Targus Group International and had offices in the US, Canada, Hong Kong, Taipei, Australia, and several European locations.
In 2000, Targus moved its headquarters to Anaheim, California. In 2004, it launched its first docking station, entered the Bluetooth market, and developed the SafePort Air Protection System.
Early in 2005, Targus expanded into mobile device accessories with a line of iPod products. Since 2015, it has partnered with Samsung and Google. In 2016, Targus Group International filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, planning to liquidate its assets after reaching an agreement with creditors.
