Key facts and history
Meta's vice president for VR, Mark Rabkin, told employees that nearly 20 million Quest headsets had been sold as of March 2023.[2] Rabkin acknowledged that newer cohorts of Quest buyers were less engaged than early adopters.[2] Positional tracking with six degrees of freedom is achieved through internal sensors and a front-facing camera array on the headset.[3] A functionality named "Oculus Link" enables a USB connection to a computer, allowing the use of software designed for Oculus Rift.[3]
"Passthrough" augmented reality was first introduced on a Meta device with this line; it displays camera feeds when a user steps outside the "Guardian" boundary.[3] Following the initial launch, Meta has issued both new Quest models and updates to the Quest OS.[1] A 2023 agreement with Comcast led to the inclusion of the Peacock service on Meta Quest headsets.[1]
What the cited sources add
A Verge report from March 2023 stated that Meta execs laid out plans for three new Quest headsets, AR glasses, and a neural interface smartwatch during an internal presentation.[2] The same report noted that Meta's flagship Quest 3 would be two times thinner, at least twice as powerful, and cost slightly more than the $400 Quest 2.[2] Rabkin told employees that Meta planned to ship a more "accessible" headset codenamed Ventura in 2024.[2] That article also stated that an update allowed Quest to use the feature with USB 2.0 cables, including the one it ships with.[4]
