Aston Villa goalkeeper Jimmy Rimmer suffered a recurring shoulder injury after 10 minutes. His replacement, Nigel Spink, made his second first team appearance and was highly praised for preventing Bayern from scoring. Bayern had a goal disallowed for offside with three minutes remaining. As defending European champions, Villa were invited into the European Cup, European Super Cup, and Intercontinental Cup. Their European Cup defence ended in a quarter-final defeat to Juventus. They beat Barcelona 3–1 on aggregate to win the Super Cup, but lost 2–0 to Peñarol in the Intercontinental Cup.
