Paris Saint-Germain FC was officially founded on 2 August 1970, with the merger finalized on 12 August 1970, through the union of Stade Saint-Germanois (often known as Stade Saint-Germain) and Paris FC.

Stade Saint-Germain was founded on 21 June 1904 and based in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Its badge featured the town's coat of arms, including the cot, the fleur-de-lis, and a date referencing the commune as the birthplace of King Louis XIV. The club's best Coupe de France performance before the merger was reaching the round of 32 in 1967–68, where they lost to Olympique de Marseille.
