Basic Construction
Before you can build a world, you first learn to build a wall.
Basic Construction is one of the earliest research blueprints in Oxygen Not Included, unlocking the fundamental building tools that let a fledgling colony shape the raw rock of its underground habitat. Without it, duplicants are limited to whatever pre-fabricated structures they land with; with it, they can carve walls, lay floors, and begin the slow, methodical process of turning a barren subterranean pocket into a functioning home.
As a Tier 1 blueprint, it sits at the very base of the construction tech tree and is typically among the first things a player researches at the Research Station. It represents the game's core loop in miniature: gather resources, allocate a duplicant to build, and expand your living space one tile at a time.

Lore & Background
In the cramped landing pod that delivers a new colony to the planet's crust, the first order of business is never oxygen or food—it's shelter. The Basic Construction blueprint encodes the simplest principles of structural engineering: how to cut a channel through solid rock, how to reinforce a ceiling so it doesn't cave in during the next tremor, and how to lay a flat surface that won't crumble under a duplicant's boots. It is, in the most literal sense, the knowledge that separates a colony from a grave.
Duplicants who perform basic construction work are often the first to develop the calloused, methodical temperament that defines the colony's backbone. They measure, they chip, they haul debris. There is no glamour in it, and no duplicant ever writes a poetry cycle about it, but every hydroponics bay, every power plant, every cozy little bedroom with a lamp and a rug traces its lineage back to that first carefully placed wall segment.
The blueprint itself is unremarkable by later standards—compared to the sweeping architectural feats of mid- and late-game construction, it is almost quaint. Yet in the lore of the colony, it carries a quiet weight: it is the moment the crew stops being passengers and starts being inhabitants.
In Their Own Story
The dust hadn't settled from the landing when Maren dropped her pack and pulled out the tablet. Three lines of text blinked at her: BASIC CONSTRUCTION — UNLOCKED. She could feel the rock walls pressing in, the faint groan of strata shifting a kilometre overhead.
"Alright," she said, not looking up. "Who's got the chisel?"
Nobody answered. Nobody needed to. Within an hour, a narrow corridor had been cut into the grey stone, and the air—still thin, still tasting of iron—finally had somewhere to go. Maren ran her thumb along the freshly cut edge. Rough. Imperfect. Solid.
She smiled. It was enough for tonight.
Reader's Guide
Basic Construction is a single Tier 1 blueprint with no prerequisites. It is typically researched first or second at the Research Station, using the colony's initial pool of research points and a small amount of raw material (usually a few units of rock or metal gathered by hand).
What it unlocks:
• Basic Construction Tool / Building Ability — Allows any duplicant to build and deconstruct basic structures: rock walls, rock floors, and simple structural supports. This is the foundational building verb for the entire game; every later construction tier builds on the spatial logic established here.
• Wall and Floor Placement — Duplicants can now designate areas of solid rock to carve into habitable space, or place pre-formed wall/floor tiles in open pockets. This is how you create rooms, corridors, and ceilings.
• Basic Deconstruction — Structures built with basic materials can be selected and removed, returning a portion of their constituent resources to the inventory. Essential for correcting mistakes in tight early-game layouts.
Practical tip: Because every later building tier (advanced construction, decorative elements, piping, etc.) assumes you already have enclosed rooms, invest a few minutes after unlocking this blueprint to carve out a small, sealed chamber before tackling oxygen or power. A sealed room is the single most important structural decision you will make in the first hour of a colony.
Did You Know?
- Basic Construction is one of the very first blueprints available, meaning a new colony can begin shaping its habitat within minutes of the research station being online.
- The construction verbs unlocked here—carving, placing, deconstructing—form the interaction grammar for every later building tier in the game, from advanced walls to decorative furniture.
- Because the game is a 2D cross-section, 'building a wall' in ONI often means cutting a line through solid rock rather than assembling panels, which gives the early construction phase a distinctly geological, almost minin
- Duplicants performing basic construction generate heat and consume oxygen, so even this humble task must be balanced against the colony's already-fragile life-support budget in the opening hours.
