The Matriarch's Return
The oldest Duplicant wakes, and the colony she outlived must decide whether to feed, flee, or fight.
The Matriarch's Return is a story-mode mission in Oxygen Not Included in which the colony is confronted by the Matriarch, an ancient and physically immense Duplicant whose awakening upends the fragile systems the player has painstakingly built. Unlike routine resource-management challenges, this event demands that the player think in terms of containment, appeasement, and rapid triage rather than steady optimization.
In the broader narrative of ONI, the Matriarch represents the oldest thread of Duplicant lineage—a living reminder that the colony's genetic heritage stretches back far beyond the small, specialized workers the player commands. Her return forces a reckoning: the asteroid is not an empty canvas, and the colony is not the first to call it home.

Lore & Background
Among the Duplicants born on the colony's asteroid, the Matriarch occupies a singular place. Where standard Duplicants are compact, task-oriented, and emotionally layered in the way Klei's design gives them small moods and preferences, the Matriarch is something older and larger in every sense—physically vast, slow to act, and driven by needs that dwarf the oxygen and calorie budgets a typical colony can spare. Her existence hints at a prior era of Duplicant life on the asteroid, one the player's colony has only inherited in fragments: buried biomes, dormant flora, and the occasional anomalous scan reading.
When the Matriarch stirs, the immediate effect is environmental. Her sheer mass and metabolic output strain the local atmosphere, heat, and structural integrity of nearby modules. Duplicants in her vicinity react with a mix of awe and terror, their mood systems registering her presence as a singular, overwhelming stimulus. The colony's carefully balanced loops—oxygen scrubbers, water reclamation, food production—suddenly face a demand that no standard production line can meet without diverting resources from every other priority.
The narrative weight of the event lies in what it asks of the player. Rather than simply surviving, the colony must make a moral and logistical choice: invest in appeasing an ancient being whose needs are alien to the small Duplicants, attempt to isolate her in a way that preserves the colony's infrastructure, or accept the losses and restructure around her presence. Each path reshapes the colony's identity, and the Matriarch's continued existence becomes a permanent variable in every subsequent planning decision.
In Their Own Story
The first sign was the tremor in the lower cavern floor—not seismic, not volcanic, but rhythmic, like a heartbeat resuming after a long pause. Rhea, a geology Duplicant, set down her scanner and pressed her palm flat against the rock. The vibration was warm. It carried a faint, sweet smell, like overripe fruit and hot metal, seeping up through hairline cracks in the basalt.
By the time the colony's alarm klaxons cycled, the Matriarch had already shifted. A section of the eastern wall simply… wasn't there anymore. Not collapsed. Displaced. As if something the size of a small hab module had rolled aside and pressed its face against the glass, watching. The light in her eyes was the same amber as the colony's status LEDs, but deeper, older, patient in a way none of the workers were.
Commander Osei stood at the airlock, her hand on the emergency seal. Behind her, the other Duplicants had stopped mid-task. The oxygen scrubbers hummed. The Matriarch breathed, and the whole station swayed.
Reader's Guide
Trigger: The mission activates in story mode once the player has cleared the prerequisite biome and reached a defined colony population threshold. A seismic warning appears, followed by a short cutscene introducing the Matriarch's awakening.
Starting conditions: The colony retains its existing infrastructure, but the Matriarch's presence introduces a large, immobile entity in or near a specific cavern zone. Her metabolic output raises local temperature and consumes oxygen at a rate that dwarfs standard Duplicant demand. Structural integrity of nearby modules is reduced.
Key triggered events: (1) A mood-shock wave affects all Duplicants within a radius, lowering morale temporarily. (2) A resource-drain phase begins, where oxygen and heat budgets are strained for a set duration. (3) A decision window opens, presenting the player with response options.
Player response options: The player may choose to (a) build a containment or feeding structure to appease the Matriarch, investing significant materials and ongoing resources; (b) seal off the affected zone and evacuate nearby Duplicants, accepting the loss of that area; or (c) attempt a direct mitigation (cooling, oxygen pumping) to reduce her metabolic strain without full appeasement. Each option has trade-offs in resource cost, Duplicant safety, and long-term colony layout.
Win condition: The Matriarch's immediate threat is resolved—either she is calmed, contained, or the colony successfully adapts around her. Lose condition: Colony-wide oxygen or structural failure occurs before the player stabilizes the situation, resulting in a mission failure and colony reset for that story segment.
Did You Know?
- The Matriarch's physical scale in-game makes her one of the largest single entities a player will encounter, far exceeding the footprint of standard Duplicants or even most machines.
- Her presence triggers a unique mood response in nearby Duplicants that is distinct from standard stress or happiness modifiers, reflecting her status as an ancestor figure.
- The mission's resource demands are designed to force players to rethink their infrastructure layout, as standard production loops are often insufficient to offset her metabolic output.
- The Matriarch's design echoes the game's broader theme that the colony's asteroid has a history predating the player's arrival, hinted at through buried biomes and anomalous flora.
