Cryo Chamber

Preserve your workforce in suspended animation to save vital resources.

The Cryo Chamber is a specialized containment unit designed specifically for Duplicant use within an asteroid colony. It allows colonists to enter a state of suspended animation, effectively halting their biological needs for food and water while consuming electricity instead.

Lore & Background

The technology implies a level of sophistication beyond mere survival. It suggests the mission planners anticipated long-term isolation and resource bottlenecks. For the Duplicants themselves, it is a cold sanctuary where time stands still, bridging the gap between labor and recovery without the risk of starvation or dehydration.

In Their Own Story

With no food remaining in the pantry, this was the only option. The lid sealed with a hiss, and the lights dimmed to a soft blue.

Reader's Guide

To unlock this technology, players must progress through the Research tab until Cryo systems become available. Once built, assign a Duplicant the job to sleep inside the unit. While in stasis, the occupant consumes no food or water, though the machine draws constant electricity from your grid. Strategically, Cryo Chambers are invaluable during resource shortages. If your hydroponics fail or oxygen runs low, placing idle workers into cryosleep prevents starvation deaths without requiring manual intervention. However, they generate heat internally and must be cooled by nearby refrigeration to prevent overheating the room. Building multiple units allows you to manage workforce activity cycles efficiently. Use them to store excess colonists during early game scarcity or keep specialists safe from hazardous zones while they remain on standby for critical tasks when needed later. They also provide a visual indicator of colony health. A lit chamber shows active power flow, while a dark one signals failure. Ensure your battery backups can sustain them during generator downtime to avoid waking colonists into dangerous conditions unexpectedly. Proper placement near cooling vents ensures the surrounding environment remains stable for other machinery nearby.
