Oxygen Not Included Codexery

Dwarf

The Dwarf is the default and most universally encountered species of Duplicant in Oxygen Not Included. Humanoid in build and roughly human-proportioned, Dwarfs serve as the colony's baseline crew—versatile, adaptable, and free of the extreme specializations that define the Gristle, Ooze, and Fungus lineages. For most players, the Dwarf is the face of the colony, the first pair of eyes peering through a cross-section of alien rock and the first pair of hands to crack open a can of rations.

Lore & Background

Within the colony-ship narrative, Dwarfs represent the standard-issue crew complement: individuals selected for general competence rather than a single narrow function. Where a Gristle might be bred for raw strength or an Ooze for chemical tolerance, a Dwarf is engineered to be *good enough at everything*. This makes them the most flexible workforce on the ship, able to handle construction, agriculture, research, and maintenance without the dietary or environmental restrictions that limit their cousins.

Their balanced physiology is a double-edged sword in the colony's long survival. A Dwarf will not choke on Fungus the way a Gristle might, nor will they sicken from Meat the way an Ooze would, but they also lack the extreme stat spikes that let a specialist outperform them in a single domain. In practice, this means a well-managed Dwarf colony thrives on diversity of *traits* rather than diversity of *species*, and the Dwarf's greatest strength is simply that they do not get in their own way.

Among the other Duplicants, Dwarfs tend to be the social glue. Their moods, needs, and comfort thresholds are the most straightforward to read and satisfy, which makes them the species most often placed in leadership or coordination roles during the colony's long, quiet stretches between crises.

In Their Own Story

The air in the habitat module tasted of recycled nitrogen and the faint metallic tang of the ventilation ducts overhead. Kael, a Dwarf with a smudge of lubricant across her left cheek, pressed her forehead against the cold glass of the observation port and watched the cross-section of the world scroll by in slow, geological silence. Layers of basalt, pockets of trapped gas, a thin vein of water threading through the rock like a capillary.

Behind her, the colony hummed. Somewhere a Gristle was lifting a crate three times his body weight and grunting with satisfaction. Somewhere else an Ooze was dissolving a patch of mold and purring. But here, in this quiet corner, Kael was simply *being*—drinking a glass of water, eating a small portion of meat and a slice of fungus, feeling her hunger bar tick down in a slow, honest line.

She turned from the glass and walked back into the work. There was a reactor to tune, a pipe to reroute, a mood to keep steady. Nothing extraordinary. That was the point. That was the Dwarf way.

Reader's Guide

Species: Dwarf

Stat Profile: Dwarfs are the balanced baseline. They carry no major stat bonuses or penalties compared to the other three species. Their Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, and other core attributes sit in the middle of the species range, making them reliable across every job type—construction, farming, research, and maintenance—without the extreme spikes (or dips) that Gristle, Ooze, or Fungus Duplicants exhibit.

Diet & Food Compatibility: Dwarfs have the broadest edible-food pool of any species. They can safely consume Meat, Fungus, and Nectar-based items without triggering the adverse mood or health effects that plague the other lineages. This makes them the safest choice for a colony whose food production is still ramping up.

Mood Triggers & Needs: Dwarfs use the standard mood system. They gain or lose mood from the same set of triggers as other species—eating preferred foods, sleeping in a comfortable bed, working in a well-lit and clean area, socializing, and being exposed to unpleasant conditions (high temperature, poor air quality, loud noise). Because they lack species-specific mood modifiers, their mood curve is the easiest to predict and stabilize.

Abilities & Restrictions: Dwarfs have no unique passive ability and no species-specific restriction. They can be assigned to any task, placed in any habitat configuration, and paired with any trait combination. Their lack of a special ability is, in practice, their flexibility: they are the species you reach for when you need a Duplicant who will not create a dietary, environmental, or mechanical exception you have to plan around.
