The Four Emperors of the Sea (Yonko) are four powerful pirates regarded as great powers in One Piece. In the New World, the second half of the Grand Line, they rule separate empires made up of several islands.

Lore & Background
The World Government fears an alliance between two or more Emperors, and the struggle between the Government and the Emperors is the story's main conflict. The original four were Shanks, Whitebeard, Kaido and Big Mom, who kept a precarious balance of power with the Seven Warlords and the Marines. Big Mom was the first to form a pirate empire, followed by Whitebeard and Kaido. Blackbeard's capture of Ace led to the war in which Whitebeard died, and two years later Blackbeard was considered to have taken his place; after Big Mom and Kaido were defeated in the Onigashima war, Monkey D. Luffy and Buggy were considered their replacements.
