Gameplay
Ball x Pit is set in the ruins of Ballbylon after a meteor destroyed the city, leaving a giant pit. Adventurers descend into the pit to seek riches while facing hordes of monsters. The game combines roguelike, bullet hell, and town-building simulation genres. The first stage is inspired by block breaker games like Arkanoid. The player controls an adventurer who launches balls at enemy forces marching toward them; if a monster reaches the bottom of the field, it damages the adventurer, and the run ends if too much damage is taken. Each adventurer starts with a set of balls, some inflicting special damage. Collecting gems from monsters levels up the adventurer, allowing choices to add new balls, level up existing ones, or receive passive items. Monsters sometimes drop special items that can be fissioned for multiple powerups, used to fuse two balls into one with combined effects, or evolve balls into stronger versions. Runs are divided into segments ending with mini-boss fights, and the final stage features a powerful boss. After completing a run or losing all health, the adventurer returns to expand a village adjacent to the elevator. Using gold, blueprints, wood, and stone collected during action stages, the player builds resource spaces or constructs buildings that unlock new characters or improve starting attributes. The player can assign workers to collect resources or advance construction. Boss fights yield gears that allow the elevator to reach new levels with different monsters and bosses.
Development
Lead developer Kenny Sun was inspired by Punball, a ball-breakout mobile game with roguelike elements he discovered around November 2021. While he enjoyed it, he saw areas for improvement and began work on his own game after a few weeks. As his ideas expanded, he added multiple adventurers and city-building to support meta-progression between runs. The first update, the Regal Update, released on January 26, 2026, adding two new characters, eight special balls, three passive abilities, and an endless mode. The Shadow Update followed on April 27, 2026, introducing two more characters, eleven special balls, four passive abilities, and an option to re-roll past upgrades. An iOS and Android port was released on March 12, 2026.
Reception
Ball x Pit received generally favorable reviews on multiple platforms according to Metacritic. OpenCritic assessed the game as receiving mighty approval, with 92% of critics recommending it. The iOS and Android version also received positive reviews. The game sold over 300,000 units across all platforms in its first five days, and surpassed 1 million copies sold worldwide by December 2025. Following this success, the developers announced plans for three free content updates throughout 2026.
