Gameplay

Ultra Rumble is a third-person battle royale game with MOBA-style mechanics. It can be played online against others or offline against computer-controlled opponents. A standard match has up to 24 players split into eight teams of three, though later updates added duos and solo modes. The map shrinks over time, and the last team standing wins. Each character has three Quirk skills with cooldowns that vary by strength, plus a unique action—for example, Izuku can carry a downed teammate to safety. Players search the map for items like cards that boost Quirk skills or potions that fill a Guard Point gauge, which blocks damage and knockback. Characters fall into five categories: Assault, Rapid, Strike, Support, and Technical. Six characters start unlocked; others and cosmetics come from a gacha system. Some items are also available through the Special License, a battle pass that can be advanced by playing many matches or by paying. Rental Tickets let players try locked characters for a few matches. Voice actors from the anime reprise their roles in both Japanese and English.

Development and release

Ultra Rumble was announced in Weekly Shōnen Jump on January 13, 2022. Byking, which previously developed My Hero One's Justice and My Hero One's Justice 2, returned as developer. Producer Aoba Miyazaki stated that the developers aimed to provide a unique battle royale experience using the characters' different fighting styles. Two closed beta tests were held in February and August 2022, followed by an open beta in May–June 2023. The full game was released on September 28, 2023. Post-launch content has been released in seasons every two months, including new characters, modes, gameplay mechanics, stages, and cosmetics.

Reception

Before the full launch, critics who played the closed beta described the game as unpolished and lacking balance, though they saw promise. One reviewer enjoyed it despite the balance problems, and another found the open beta fun even though they usually dislike battle royale games. When it came out, one outlet gave it 4 out of 5 stars, complimenting the map, matchmaking, and visual excitement, but pointing out that the villain selection was small and there were few game modes at first. Within its first month, the game was downloaded seven million times, and that number grew to over ten million by early February 2024.
