Third Impact is the cataclysm that takes place in The End of Evangelion after being anticipated throughout the TV series. It is the third of three great events on Earth involving the First Ancestral Race, and its purpose was to achieve Human Instrumentality, merging all of humanity into a single life form.

Background
The goal is nearly reached, but under Shinji Ikari's direction it is rejected and reversed, though not before the whole planet is laid waste. The First Impact had come in prehistoric times, when Lilith's Black Moon struck the Earth where Hakone now is, by accident, since the Seed meant for Earth, Adam, had already landed in the White Moon in Antarctica. During Third Impact the Mass Production Evangelions crucify Unit-01 and form an inverted Tree of Life around it by resonating their A.T. Fields.
