Background
After his mother's death, his father abandoned him and he lived for eleven years with his 'sensei', until he was summoned to Tokyo-3 to pilot Unit-01 against the Angels. In Tokyo-3 he lives with Misato Katsuragi, and they are later joined by Asuka Langley Soryu. He starts out passive and laid-back and at first refuses to pilot; though he denies it, he longs for praise, and he comes to pilot Unit-01 to win his father's approval, repeatedly telling himself that he mustn't run away.
