Boruto: Naruto Next Generations (TV series)

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations is a Japanese anime television series adapted from the Boruto manga, which was written by Ukyō Kodachi and illustrated by Mikio Ikemoto under the supervision of series creator Masashi Kishimoto. It serves as both a spin-off and a direct sequel to the earlier anime series Naruto (2002–2007) and Naruto: Shippuden (2007–2017). The story centers on Boruto Uzumaki, the son of Naruto, and his ninja team. The show was produced by Pierrot and ran for 293 episodes on TV Tokyo from April 2017 to March 2023; a second part has been announced and is currently in development. Unlike the manga, which initially retold the events of the 2015 film Boruto: Naruto the Movie, the anime begins as a prequel set before Boruto and his friends become ninjas, later moving into the film's storyline. Years after the Fourth Great Ninja War, Konoha prospers under the Seventh Hokage, Naruto Uzumaki. He is married to Hinata Hyuga, and they have two children: Boruto and Himawari. Boruto resents his father’s constant absence due to his duties and seeks his approval by enrolling in the Ninja Academy. After graduating, he forms a genin team with Sarada Uchiha and Mitsuki, led by their jonin teacher, Konohamaru Sarutobi, who was once Naruto’s student. Meanwhile, Sasuke Uchiha warns Naruto of a threat linked to Kaguya Ōtsutsuki’s bloodline. Kaguya’s successors, Momoshiki and Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki, kidnap Naruto to extract the Nine-Tailed Fox, Kurama, from him in order to revive a dying Divine Tree. Boruto, Sasuke, and the four Kage rescue Naruto and defeat the Ōtsutsuki, but before dying, Momoshiki places a mark called “Karma” on Boruto. Boruto and his friends later learn of an organization called Kara, which seeks people bearing Karma marks. The team encounters a boy named Kawaki, a fugitive from Kara who also has a Karma. Naruto adopts Kawaki and tries to protect him. Sasuke discovers that all Karma users will eventually be taken over by the Ōtsutsuki clan, including Kara’s leader, Jigen, and Boruto. A mutiny erupts within Kara: Koji Kashin, a clone of Naruto’s late master Jiraiya, challenges Jigen, while Kara member Amado reveals that Jigen has been possessed by Isshiki Ōtsutsuki since Kaguya betrayed him millennia ago. Amado explains that Karma allows the Ōtsutsuki to resurrect through a host’s body. Isshiki targets Kawaki, but Naruto confronts him.
