The Elder Gods

The pantheon that made the realms and set the tournament's rules.

The Elder Gods are, in the Mortal Kombat backstory, an ancient pantheon of almighty, eternal beings who created the series' realms. They decreed that one realm could conquer another only by beating its greatest warriors in ten straight Mortal Kombat tournaments.

Lore & Background

Shinnok is a former Elder God who was banished and wars on them in Mortal Kombat 4, and his sister Cetrion is the Elder Goddess of life. Raiden becomes an Elder God after Mortal Kombat 4 but renounces the role when the others refuse to act against the Deadly Alliance. In the 2011 reboot they empower Raiden to kill Shao Kahn for breaking the tournament's rules. The Titan Kronika predates them, and in Mortal Kombat 11 Raiden learns they have been killed.
