Melas (mythology)

Multiple figures in Greek myth share the name Melas.

Melas is a name borne by several figures in Greek mythology, including sons of Poseidon, Porthaon, Phrixus, Licymnius, Oenopion, Antasus, and Ops, as well as a Tyrrhenian pirate. A Melas, son of Ops, was impersonated by Athena to dissuade Teuthis from withdrawing his army. One of the Tyrrhenian pirates who attempted to delude Dionysus was transformed into a dolphin.
