The rivalry began at the 1990 Macau Grand Prix. Häkkinen won the first race, but a collision in the second race allowed Schumacher to win overall. Both entered Formula 1 in 1991, Häkkinen with Lotus and Schumacher with Jordan before switching to Benetton. Their rivalry became prominent from 1998 to 2001. Häkkinen won championships in 1998 and 1999. Schumacher won in 2000 and 2001. The rivalry ended when Häkkinen retired after the 2001 season.
