Bruce McLaren founded Bruce McLaren Motor Racing in 1963. The team won its first Formula One race at the 1968 Belgian Grand Prix. McLaren became one of only three drivers, alongside Jack Brabham and Dan Gurney, to win a World Championship race in a car of their own construction.

Bruce McLaren was a New Zealand racing driver, automotive designer, engineer, and motorsport executive. He competed in Formula One from 1958 to 1970, winning four Grands Prix and finishing runner-up in the 1960 World Drivers' Championship. He also won the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans with Chris Amon and the Canadian-American Challenge Cup in 1967 and 1969. McLaren was killed on 2 June 1970 while testing a McLaren M8D at Goodwood Circuit.
