In Their Own Story
In the final race of the 1983 season at Long Beach, Watson faced a daunting challenge: starting 22nd on the grid. This was the farthest back any modern Grand Prix driver had ever started to win a race. As the lights went out, he navigated the street circuit with precision, passing teammates and rivals alike. His teammate Niki Lauda started 23rd but fought hard throughout. Watson ultimately crossed the line 27 seconds ahead of Lauda, securing his final Formula One victory. This feat followed a similar comeback at the 1982 Detroit Grand Prix, where he overtook three cars in one lap on a difficult track to win from 17th. These victories highlighted his ability to manage tires and fuel while maintaining speed, a skill that saw him out-qualify and out-race Niki Lauda during their time as teammates at McLaren.
