MP4-22 Technical Shift

The MP4-22: eight victories, no mechanical retirements, and a season defined by rivalry and controversy.

The McLaren MP4-22 is a Formula One racing car constructed by the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team for the 2007 Formula One World Championship. The chassis was designed by Paddy Lowe, Neil Oatley, Pat Fry, Mike Coughlan and Simon Lacey, with Andy Cowell and Markus Duesmann designing the bespoke Mercedes-Benz engine. The car was revealed in testing at Circuit de Valencia in Spain on 15 January 2007, and was driven by double World Champion Fernando Alonso and debutant Lewis Hamilton.

Lore & Background

The MP4-22 proved to be one of the most competitive cars of the season, with Alonso and Hamilton achieving four victories each. However, a fierce rivalry between the two drivers, combined with the 2007 Formula One espionage controversy, resulted in McLaren losing both championships to Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro. This was the first McLaren Formula One car to run with Bridgestone tyres since the MP4-16 in 2001. The car was the last McLaren to use traction control, as new FIA rules for 2008 banned driver aids via a standard ECU.

In Their Own Story

The rain-slicked streets of Montreal glistened under the floodlights as Lewis Hamilton gripped the steering wheel of the silver-and-blue MP4-22. The Mercedes engine roared, a familiar yet evolving sound compared to the previous year's Honda unit. As he navigated the chicane, water sprayed high against the carbon fiber bodywork, obscuring his vision for a split second before clearing. This was not just another race; it was the culmination of months of rigorous testing and the quiet confidence of a team that believed in its new direction. Crossing the line first, Hamilton felt the vibration of history through the chassis, knowing the MP4-22 had finally delivered.

Reader's Guide

The MP4-22 featured 'some advanced engineering concepts' and 'novel aerodynamic solutions'. A unique front wing design, tested by Pedro de la Rosa on 1 May 2007 at Catalunya, featured a thin carbon fibre wing arching over the nosecone; it debuted at the Spanish Grand Prix and was deemed surplus at the Italian Grand Prix due to high-speed/low-drag requirements. The car scored eight victories, was the most reliable car of the season with no mechanical retirements, and its low downforce package was extremely competitive. McLaren led the Constructors' Championship until the Italian Grand Prix, after which they were excluded due to the espionage controversy. The MP4-22 was succeeded by the MP4-23.
