Concept and design

For EDI's body in Mass Effect 3, the art team sought a "sexy, chrome and robotic" appearance inspired by Maria from Fritz Lang's Metropolis. Early concepts depicted her without eyes, using holographic eyes instead, but this was discarded due to constraints with BioWare's digital acting system. The final design involved debate over how robotic she would be, her hair, and facial expressiveness. The team decided EDI would have the same facial effects as humans, as the body was an infiltration unit that "once had skin over the metal." The result featured a two-tone appearance with solid and transparent surfaces. Tricia Helfer voiced EDI in both Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3. Helfer described the work as fun but streamlined, limited to "reading loose sentences in a booth." She acknowledged that EDI's return in Mass Effect 4 seemed unlikely but expressed openness to a different role.

Appearances

In Mass Effect 2, EDI is introduced as the Normandy SR-2's artificial intelligence, depicted as a spherical hologram at terminals and limited by her programming. She provides Shepard with information and aid, controls all vital ship systems, and has a conflicting relationship with pilot Joker, initially antagonistic with formal address before shifting to first names and "her." EDI names the character Legion by analogy to the biblical story in Mark 5:9. If Shepard scans Uranus, EDI makes a joke about the planet's name. During the final mission, the Normandy is boarded by Collectors; EDI guides Joker and is unshackled from her programming to manually control the ship and escape. In Mass Effect 3, set during a Reaper invasion, EDI acquires a body from a Cerberus agent named Eva Coré, allowing her to become a squadmate who can join Shepard on missions.

Reception and analysis

EDI has become popular in cosplay, fan art, and modding communities, with cosplayers recreating her robotic appearance and fans creating life-sized papercraft models. A mod for Resident Evil 3 Remake replaces Jill Valentine's outfit with one of EDI's costumes. Taryn van der Byl of NAG highlighted the "probing Uranus" joke. Kenneth Shepard of Kotaku regarded EDI as "an incredible character" but felt conflicted, praising her deadpan but witty attitude in Mass Effect 2 and her attempts to learn what it means to be a person as "fascinating," yet criticizing her story becoming tied to her relationship with Joker, which he called "uneven."

Wes Fenlon of PC Gamer criticized EDI's design in Mass Effect 3 and her relationship with Joker, stating her role in representing humanity was already covered by Legion. GamesRadar+ included EDI in a list of "uncomfortably sexy AI characters." Stacey Henley of The Gamer criticized EDI's alternate outfits as overly sexualized, leaning into the 'sexbot' trope and reducing her to her body, comparing her to Miranda Lawson and Quiet.
