Sea spiders, scientifically classified as the class Pycnogonida, are marine arthropods found in oceans across the globe, with over 1,300 known species. Their leg spans vary widely, from very small to over a certain length; most species are on the smaller side in shallow waters, but individuals can become quite large in the Antarctic region and in deep-sea environments. Despite their common name and superficial resemblance, they are not true spiders nor are they arachnids. While some early 2000s research suggested they might be a sister group to all other living arthropods, subsequent studies have strongly supported their traditional placement within the chelicerates, alongside horseshoe crabs and arachnids.
Their most striking feature is their morphology: the body is greatly reduced, while the walking legs are enormous, creating an "all legs" or "no body" appearance. The body is divided into three main sections: the cephalon (head), trunk, and abdomen, though some studies align this with the prosoma-opisthosoma division seen in other chelicerates. The exoskeleton is tube-like, lacking the typical dorsoventral division of tergite and sternite. The cephalon is a fused structure containing a unique, three-fold symmetrical proboscis with a Y-shaped mouth, which is well-developed and flexible in species with reduced appendages. An ocular tubercle on the head bears up to two pairs of simple eyes, which are median in origin and homologous to the median ocelli of other arthropods; lateral eyes are completely absent. The cephalon also bears up to four pairs of appendages: chelifores (which can terminate in a pincer), palps, and ovigers. The chelifores are used for feeding, the palps for sensing and manipulating food, and the ovigers for cleaning and, in males, carrying offspring. These appendages are often reduced or absent depending on the species and sex. The leg-bearing trunk somites carry the walking legs, which are typically composed of eight tubular segments and are much larger than the body in most species.
