Rudists

Rudists are an extinct order of marine bivalves, the Hippuritida, that first appeared in the Late Jurassic. Their earliest known fossils come from rocks in France, and they are thought to have evolved from earlier bivalve groups such as Pachyrisma and related taxa, which date to the Early Jurassic. Early rudists were elongated and had two similarly shaped valves, often resembling pipes or stakes. During the Cretaceous, they underwent a dramatic diversification, developing a highly specialized morphology: one valve became a flat, lid-like structure, while the other formed an inverted, spike-shaped cone. This conical valve was attached to the seafloor or to neighboring rudists, and its size ranged from just a few centimeters to over a meter in length. The upper, lid-like valve could take various forms, including a simple flat cover, a low cone, a spiral, or even a star shape. These Cretaceous rudists became prolific reef builders in the Tethys Ocean, forming structures that could reach hundreds of meters in height and extend for hundreds of kilometers along continental shelves. At one point, such reefs fringed the North American coast from the Gulf of Mexico to the Maritime Provinces. Their success as reef builders may have been due to the extreme Cretaceous climate, where tropical waters were significantly warmer and more saline than today—conditions that favored rudists but were less hospitable to scleractinian corals. Because of their high porosity, rudist reefs are important oil traps. The group went completely extinct at the end of the Cretaceous, likely due to the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, though some evidence suggests a decline may have begun about 2.5 million years earlier.

Rudists were among the most important constituents of reefs during the Cretaceous Period. Their classification as true reef-builders is controversial because they would catch and trap much sediment between their lower conical valves, meaning they were not completely composed of biogenic carbonates as a coral would be. However, rudist reefs were so successful that they may have driven scleractinian corals out of many tropical environments, including shelves that are today the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. Their success as reef builders was likely due to the extreme environment of the Cretaceous, when tropical waters were between 6°C and 14°C warmer than today and also more highly saline—conditions less hospitable to corals. These rudist reefs were sometimes hundreds of meters tall and often ran for hundreds of kilometers on continental shelves, at one point fringing the North American coast from the Gulf of Mexico to the present-day Maritime Provinces. Because of their high porosity, rudist reefs are highly favored oil traps. The rudists became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous, apparently as a result of the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, though it had been thought that this group began a decline about 2.5 million years earlier which culminated in complete extinction half a million years before the end of the Cretaceous.
