Anomalocaris is an extinct genus of radiodont, an order of early-diverging stem-group marine arthropods. It is best known from the type species *A. canadensis*, found in the Stephen Formation (particularly the Burgess Shale) of British Columbia, Canada, and from the older Emu Bay Shale of Australia (*A. daleyae*). Other unnamed species are known from China and the United States. Like other radiodonts, *Anomalocaris* possessed swimming flaps along its body, large compound eyes with many lenses, and a single pair of segmented frontal appendages used for grasping prey. Estimated to reach 34.2–37.8 cm in length excluding the frontal appendages and tail fan, it is one of the largest animals of the Cambrian and thought to be one of the earliest examples of an apex predator, though other such predators have been found in older Cambrian deposits.

The fossil history of *Anomalocaris* is marked by a series of misidentifications. The first specimens were collected in 1886 by Richard G. McConnell of the Geological Survey of Canada from Mount Stephen, and described in 1892 by paleontologist Joseph Frederick Whiteaves, who interpreted them as the abdomens of phyllocarid crustaceans. The name *Anomalocaris* (from Greek for "unlike other shrimp") refers to the unusual shape of these supposed body segments. In 1928, Kai Henriksen proposed that the Burgess Shale arthropod *Tuzoia* represented the missing front half of *Anomalocaris*. Meanwhile, Charles Doolittle Walcott had described a fossil mouthpart as the jellyfish *Peytoia* and a frontal appendage as part of *Sidneyia*, without connecting them to Whiteaves' find. In the 1970s, Harry B. Whittington and his students Simon Conway Morris and Derek Briggs began re-examining Burgess Shale fossils. Conway Morris identified that the mouthparts of *Laggania* matched *Peytoia* but considered it a composite. Briggs recognized that *Anomalocaris* fossils were appendages, not abdomens, and proposed they were walking legs of a giant arthropod. Eventually, Whittington uncovered a specimen showing an *Anomalocaris* appendage connected to a *Peytoia*-like mouth, revealing the true nature of the animal. *Anomalocaris* is the type genus of Anomalocarididae, a family that once included all radiodonts but now only contains *Anomalocaris* and a few close relatives.
