Phantom Pass

The ball never left his hands—your eyes just never saw it.

The Phantom Pass is the passing of Tetsuya Kuroko, the "phantom" sixth man of the Generation of Miracles and a freshman at Seirin High. Kuroko uses his lack of presence and misdirection to specialize in passing: left unguarded by opponents, he makes open passes or steals. His fast Ignite Pass is one that at first only Kagami can catch, and by the Winter Cup he has improved it into the Ignite Pass Kai.

Lore & Background

Kuroko considers himself a "shadow" whose goal is to help his "light" shine, and he is satisfied with the assist role; at the beginning of the series he chooses Kagami as his light. His talent was discovered by Akashi, who helped him perfect his passing but deliberately taught him nothing else, predicting that other skills would draw attention to Kuroko and make his misdirection ineffective.

Reader's Guide

Kuroko's passing depends on his misdirection, which wears off the more he plays, so he is often subbed out to conserve his energy. Kazunari Takao's Hawk Eye is not fooled by it, and Takao intercepts him in the Inter-High preliminaries. Aomine intercepts the Ignite Pass in the Inter-High game and stops an Ignite Pass Kai with one hand in the Winter Cup.
