The Yard of Bricks

The strip of original bricks at the Speedway's start/finish line.

When the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was paved over, one yard of the original bricks was left exposed at the start/finish line.

Lore & Background

In 2000, when the new Pagoda and Pagoda Plaza were built, the strip was extended across the pit lane into the plaza. Kissing the bricks began with Dale Jarrett at the 1996 Brickyard 400 and carried over to the Indy 500 with Gil de Ferran in 2003.
