The Milk Tradition

The Indianapolis 500 winner drinks a bottle of milk in victory lane.

One of the oldest Indianapolis 500 traditions is the winner drinking a bottle of milk straight after the race.

Lore & Background

It goes back to 1936, when winner Louis Meyer asked for a glass of buttermilk, a drink his mother had encouraged him to have on hot days. The milk and the singing of "Back Home Again in Indiana" are counted among the race's best-known traditions.
