The "Snake Pit" was the name given to the infield near turn one at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Lore & Background

It had a long reputation for rowdiness and heavy drinking, and drew college-age and counterculture fans, many with little interest in the race itself. Like the Kentucky Derby infield, it was treated as a rite of spring. In recent years the name has been used for race-day concerts in the infield.
