Indra Nooyi
Indian-born American CEO who led PepsiCo for 12 years.
Indra Nooyi (born Krishnamurthy on October 28, 1955) is an Indian-born American business executive. She was the chairman and CEO of PepsiCo from 2006 to 2018. For years, she appeared on lists of the world’s 100 most powerful women—Forbes ranked her 13th in 2014, and Fortune placed her second in both 2015 and 2017. She also serves on the boards of Amazon and the International Cricket Council.
Nooyi grew up in Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu, the second of three children. She attended Holy Angels Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School in T. Nagar. Her mother was a homemaker; her father worked as a controller at the State Bank of India. Though not formally educated, her mother created strategic dinner games and, when Nooyi and her sister were between eight and eleven, had them write speeches about what they would do as president or prime minister.
She studied physics, chemistry, and mathematics at Madras Christian College (University of Madras), earning bachelor’s degrees in 1975. The next year she completed a Post Graduate Programme Diploma at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. While studying, she played guitar in a band and excelled at cricket. In 1978, she moved to the United States to attend Yale School of Management, earning a master’s degree in public and private management in 1980.
Nooyi began her career in India as a product manager at Johnson & Johnson and at the textile firm Beardsell Ltd. While at Yale, she interned at Booz Allen Hamilton. After graduating, she joined the Boston Consulting Group as a strategy consultant, then worked at Motorola as vice president and director of corporate strategy and planning, followed by a stint at Asea Brown Boveri.
She joined PepsiCo in 1994 as senior vice president for strategic planning, a role she held until 1996. She then became senior vice president for corporate strategy and development (1996–2000), senior vice president and CFO (February 2000–April 2001), and president and CFO (2001), also joining the board. She was named CEO in 2006, replacing Steven Reinemund, becoming the fifth CEO in the company’s 44-year history.
