The club originated in 1905 as SK Vsetín and underwent several name changes, including Bruslařský klub Vsetín, Sokol Vsetín, Zbrojovka Vsetín, and various HC names before becoming VHK Vsetín in 2008. Their golden era came in the late 1990s, when they won five straight Extraliga championships from 1994–95 through 1998–99, and added a sixth in 2000–01, making them the most successful team in Czech Republic ice hockey history.

Financial difficulties forced the team to finish last in the 2005–06 and 2006–07 seasons, and they did not participate in any competition in the 2007–08 season. A new team was founded a year later, and Vsetín returned to play. After being promoted from the Czech 2. liga in 2016–17, the team has competed in the Czech 1. liga since the 2017–18 season.
