HC Energie Karlovy Vary is a professional ice hockey club from the Czech city of Karlovy Vary, competing in the top-tier Czech Extraliga. The team’s origins trace back to 1932, when enthusiasts founded SK Slavia Karlovy Vary, playing on a small lake nicknamed Little Versailles. An artificial rink was built in 1948, and by the early 1950s the club had reached the national first league, drawing crowds of over 10,000. After a name change to Dynamo in 1953, the team faced HK Lokomotiv Moscow (losing 3–2) and beat the Czechoslovak national team 8–5. Relegation followed in 1954–55 due to key injuries, and despite dominating the second league, Dynamo never returned to the top flight. The club reverted to Slavia in 1965.
The old arena deteriorated in the late 1970s, prompting plans for two new rinks. A training rink was completed in 1975, but the main arena project stalled; the existing rink received a roof only in the late 1980s, with further upgrades (changing rooms, cooling, barriers) added in 1990. Financial troubles and council disinterest led to a drop to the division level. In 1991, new management and sponsor Jan Becher revived the club. From 1993–94, the team was called HC Slavia Becherovka Karlovy Vary (later HC Becherovka Karlovy Vary). It reached the First League in 1995 and won promotion to the Extraliga in 1997 by purchasing the rights of financially struggling HC Olomouc, after failing to defeat Opava in the playoffs. A new sponsor, Sokolovská uhelná, arrived in 2002, and the club was renamed HC Energie.
Under coach Zdeněk Venera, the team reached the 2007–08 Extraliga finals, losing a seven-game series to Slavia Prague. The next season, led by coach Josef Paleček and captain Václav Skuhravý, Energie won the rematch 4–2, claiming their first Extraliga title. Playoff MVP Lukáš Mensator was key. That final series was the last played at the old Dolní Kamenna arena; the club moved to the new KV Arena the following season. Notable club icons include Václav Šinágl, Lukáš Mensator, and Tomáš Vokoun. Energie’s junior team played in the MHL (the KHL’s junior league) from 2012–13 to 2014–15. After losing main sponsor Sokolovská uhelná in 2017, the team spent the 2017–18 season in the second league, but returned to the Extraliga the following year.
