HC Sparta Praha was originally formed in 1903 as a bandy club and transformed into a hockey club in 1909. Its first great successes came after World War II, when under the name Spartak Sokolovo it won consecutive Czechoslovak national titles in 1952–53 and 1953–54. A later highly successful period arrived in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with league championships in 1989–90 and 1992–93.

In the Czech Extraliga era, Sparta won four titles over seven seasons: 1999–00, 2001–02, 2005–06, and 2006–07. The team also achieved international success, winning the Spengler Cup in 1962 and 1963, and finishing as runners-up in that tournament in 2004 and 2022. Sparta reached the finals of the European Hockey League in 1999–00, the IIHF European Champions Cup in 2008, and the Champions Hockey League in 2016–17.

Sparta's home games are played at O2 Arena, the largest hockey arena in the Czech Republic with a capacity over 17,300 spectators, where they moved in 2015 from Tipsport Arena. The club's colors are blue, yellow, and red, though jerseys have varied over time, including black, white, and grey from 2001–02, and burgundy and white since 2005–06.
