House of the Dragon Codexery

Wildfire

The volatile substance behind Blackwater and the Sept of Baelor.

Wildfire is the volatile substance used as a weapon in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire, modelled on Byzantine Greek fire; it appears in Game of Thrones rather than in the House of the Dragon era. Jaime Lannister killed King Aerys II to stop him massacring the population of King's Landing with wildfire. At the Battle of Blackwater a wildfire explosion catches the ship Black Betha and kills Matthos Seaworth.

Background

After being forced to walk naked through the streets, Cersei rigs the Great Sept of Baelor with wildfire rather than face her trial before the Faith Militant and destroys it, killing Margaery, Loras and Mace Tyrell, Lancel and Kevan Lannister, the High Sparrow and hundreds of attendees; Lancel spots the rigged cache and crawls towards it but is too late to stop the detonation. Cersei is crowned queen after Tommen's suicide.
