Sunfyre

Sunfyre the Golden, King Aegon II's dragon, wounded at Rook's Rest.

Sunfyre, also known as "Sunfyre the Golden", is a young dragon with golden scales, hatched to and ridden by King Aegon II Targaryen. He is shown taking orders in the Common Tongue as well as in High Valyrian, which sets him apart from other dragons. Badly wounded at the Battle at Rook's Rest, where he twists in the fall to shield Aegon with his body, he lies motionless there for weeks; he later wakes, is reunited with Aegon and, on Aegon's command, burns the House Mooton army alive.

Lore & Background

In season 2, Sunfyre takes part in the Battle at Rook's Rest when Aegon flies him into battle despite protests from his family and the Small Council. He attacks Princess Rhaenys Targaryen and her dragon Meleys but is quickly outmatched by the larger, more experienced dragon. When Prince Aemond arrives on Vhagar, she engulfs Sunfyre in flame, severely wounding him, and Sunfyre and Aegon tumble to the ground; as they fall, Sunfyre turns to shield Aegon from the impact with his body.

Reader's Guide

After the battle Sunfyre remains at Rook's Rest, injured, unable to fly and kept under guard, although Aegon believes that he is likely dead. In season 3 Daemon mentions that Baela spotted Sunfyre's body while scouting the Riverlands and Crownlands.
