Lore & Background
King Viserys and his court attend the funeral, where Rhaenyra is reunited with her uncle Daemon, Laena's widower. During the night Prince Aemond claims Vhagar; his cousins and nephews confront him, and in the altercation Lucerys slashes Aemond's left eye with a knife. Queen Alicent demands Lucerys' eye in return and, when Viserys refuses, lunges at him with the king's Valyrian steel dagger and wounds Rhaenyra's arm. Viserys decrees that anyone doubting his grandsons' legitimacy will lose their tongue.
Reader's Guide
Princess Rhaenys urges Lord Corlys to pass Driftmark to their granddaughter Baela rather than to Laenor's sons. Daemon and Rhaenyra agree to unite against Alicent, but cannot marry while Laenor is alive; Daemon visits Laenor's lover Ser Qarl Correy, who challenges Laenor to a duel in High Tide's hall and appears to murder him. Corlys and Rhaenys find a charred body in the hearth, and Daemon and Rhaenyra marry in the old Valyrian tradition.
