Lore & Background
Born in 81 AC as the second son of Prince Baelon and Princess Alyssa Targaryen, Daemon was described by Archmaester Gyldayn as ambitious, impetuous, and moody. Knighted at age 16 by his grandfather King Jaehaerys I, he received Dark Sister for his combat prowess. In 97 AC, he married Lady Rhea Royce, whom he called a "bronze bitch." During the Great Council of 101 AC, Daemon supported his brother Viserys' claim to the Iron Throne, intending to be declared future heir as his younger brother.
Viserys appointed him Master of Coin briefly from 103-104 AC, then Master of Laws for six months in 104, during which he became a fierce rival of the Hand, Ser Otto Hightower; he also served as Commander of the City Watch. As Commander, he armed watchmen with dirks and cudgels, giving them golden cloaks to create the "Gold Cloaks," while earning the slum titles "Prince of the City" and "Lord Flea Bottom." After a drunken jest about his brother Viserys's son Baelon being an "heir for a day," Daemon was exiled before Viserys named Rhaenyra heir.
He later joined Lord Corlys Velaryon to invade the Stepstones, slaying Craghas Drahar with Dark Sister in 108 AC and being crowned King of the Stepstones and the Narrow Sea before returning to court in 111 AC.
Reader's Guide
Daemon Targaryen is defined by his role as a prince of the ruling Targaryen dynasty and his fierce support for Rhaenyra's claim following Viserys's death. His career includes serving as Master of Coin, Master of Laws, and Commander of the City Watch in King's Landing. He commanded the Stepstones campaign alongside Corlys Velaryon, defeating the Triarchy and ruling briefly as King of the Stepstones and the Narrow Sea. His dragon is Caraxes, a lean and fierce red beast he claimed at an unknown point in time. Daemon wields Dark Sister, the Valyrian steel blade given to him at knighthood. In House of the Dragon, Matt Smith's portrayal earned critical acclaim, with nominations for Critics' Choice Awards and Astra Awards in 2023, and Saturn Awards in 2024 and 2025.
The Rogue Prince and His Redemption
Daemon Targaryen begins his narrative arc as a volatile figure known for his unpredictability and brutal enforcement methods while serving as Commander of the City Watch. Initially named heir to the Iron Throne, he is swiftly disinherited by his brother King Viserys I after making a callous remark about their deceased nephew, Prince Baelon. Following this fall from grace, Daemon retreats to Dragonstone with his paramour Mysaria, engaging in petty acts of rebellion such as stealing a dragon egg solely to provoke his brother's attention.
However, his path shifts dramatically when he accepts Lord Corlys Velaryon's request to lead the military campaign against the Triarchy in the Stepstones. Over a grueling three-year siege, Daemon demonstrates exceptional martial prowess, culminating in the slaying of Craghas Drahar at the Siege of Bloodstone. This victory secures his title as King of the Narrow Sea, yet he immediately abdicates this crown upon returning to King's Landing, kneeling before Viserys to reaffirm his brother's sovereignty.
This sequence highlights a complex character who oscillates between reckless insubordination and profound loyalty, eventually proving his worth through bloodshed rather than political maneuvering.
Dragonrider of Caraxes and Dark Sister
As one of the most formidable warriors in Westeros, Daemon is defined by his intimate bond with the dragon Caraxes and his mastery of the Valyrian steel blade known as Dark Sister. Unlike many nobles who view dragons merely as tools of war, Daemon's connection to his beast suggests a deep, almost symbiotic relationship that fuels his reputation as a fearsome combatant. His martial capabilities are not limited to aerial dominance; he is equally lethal on foot, wielding Dark Sister with the precision and brutality expected of a Targaryen prince who has seen extensive battlefield action.
This dual proficiency makes him an invaluable asset during conflicts like the War for the Stepstones, where his ability to command both dragonfire and steel turned the tide against the Triarchy. Furthermore, his status as a dragonrider places him at the center of the succession crisis, as control over dragons is synonymous with power in this era. His possession of such legendary weaponry and a fearsome mount underscores why he remains a central figure in the looming Dance of the Dragons, representing the raw, untamed force that threatens to destabilize the realm if not properly directed.
A Complicated Lineage Through Marriage
Daemon's personal life is marked by a series of high-stakes unions that intertwine him deeply with the political fabric of Westeros. He first marries Lady Rhea Royce, followed by a union with Lady Laena Velaryon, through whom he fathers two daughters, Baela and Rhaena, securing an alliance with the powerful House Velaryon. His most controversial relationship, however, is his eventual marriage to his niece, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, which produces three children: Prince Aegon the Younger, Prince Viserys, and a stillborn daughter named Visenya.
This union serves both political and personal purposes, aiming to consolidate bloodlines while satisfying Daemon's long-standing desire for his niece. Prior to these marriages, his romantic entanglements, such as his time with Mysaria, often served as distractions or tools for manipulation rather than genuine affection. The complexity of his family tree creates a web of conflicting claims and loyalties that will eventually fracture the realm. By fathering children who are both heirs and potential claimants through different mothers, Daemon inadvertently contributes to the confusion surrounding the succession, ensuring that his legacy is inextricably linked to the coming civil war.
The Catalyst for Civil Conflict
While not the sole instigator of the Dance of the Dragons, Daemon's actions serve as a primary catalyst for the devastating war of succession between the Blacks and the Greens. His initial disinheritance sets a precedent for instability within the royal family, while his later return to court introduces a volatile element that Viserys struggles to manage. Even in moments of apparent reconciliation, such as his failed attempt to seduce Rhaenyra or his eventual marriage to her, tension remains palpable beneath the surface. Ultimately, his presence ensures that the conflict between Rhaenyra and Alicent Hightower escalates beyond mere court intrigue into open warfare, as his loyalty to Rhaenyra guarantees that the realm will be torn apart by dragonfire.
