Riverrun
The ancestral stronghold of House Tully in the Riverlands.
Riverrun is the ancestral stronghold of House Tully in the Riverlands. As the ancestral seat of House Tully, it serves as the political heart of one of Westeros's most contested regions, often becoming a flashpoint during times of civil war.
Lore & Background
At the time of Aegon's conquest the Riverlands were ruled by Harren the Black, king of the Iron Islands, and the Tullys were local nobles who rebelled against him by joining Aegon the Conqueror. In House of the Dragon the Lord of Riverrun is the bedridden Lord Grover Tully, succeeded by his grandson Oscar Tully as Lord of Riverrun, head of House Tully and Lord Paramount of the Riverlands.
Reader's Guide
Riverrun is the primary stronghold of House Tully and the most significant fortress in the Riverlands. Its location at the confluence of rivers makes it a critical choke point for any army moving through the region. In House of the Dragon, Daemon Targaryen summons House Tully to Harrenhal and discusses terms with Oscar Tully to win the Riverlords for Rhaenyra. Its importance lies not just in its military strength but in its symbolic value; holding Riverrun means controlling the Riverlands' loyalty, making it a prize worth fighting for by both Greens and Blacks.
