Captain Jacob Keyes is the commanding officer of the UNSC Pillar of Autumn, the frigate that crash-lands on Installation 04 at the start of Halo: Combat Evolved. After the fall of Reach his ship, the Pillar of Autumn, follows protocol and makes a random slipspace jump to lead the Covenant away from Earth, which brings it to the ringworld Halo.
Lore & Background
On Installation 04, Keyes faced a horror that defied military logic: the Flood. Captured by the Covenant and rescued by the Master Chief, Keyes later disappears in a swamp while searching for a weapons cache and is taken by the Flood; Cortana sends the Master Chief to find him. Instead of succumbing immediately, he guided Master Chief to the ring's control room, sacrificing his humanity to prevent a galactic catastrophe.
